A Great Awakening: Two Thumbs Up

I just saw the movie “A Great Awakening,” about the friendship between Benjamin Franklin and pastor George Whitefield pronounced “Whitfield”).

I knew about the Great Awakening and the founding of the Methodist Church, but did not know Whitefield and Franklin were friends.

I didn’t realize the relationship to the American Revolution. Beautiful cinematography and music and a reminder about how ossified the church can become. Really enjoyed it.

On its debut weekend (April 3, 2026) it premiered at 1,289 theaters.

It was the sixth most-watched movie over the weekend, with the top five being The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Project Hail Mary, The Drama, Hoppers and Reminders of Him

Some 13 films debuted on the same day, including Fantasy Life, The Drama and A Love Like This

It was produced by Sight & Sound Films with a production budget of $13 million.

Watch the credits roll at the end. You won’t believe all the people who worked on the film.

A reviewer at The History Republic generally praised the movie.
