What Apple Knows, and Why "Choice" is an Issue


"Too much choice" can be as bad as "not enough choice." Ironically, having some choices generally is viewed as a positive by most consumers. But overwhelming choice is paralyzing. Those of you familiar with the Class 5 switch, and the modern business phone system, know something of the matter. Both types of switches offer hundreds to thousands of discrete features. But most end users, business or consumer, use only a handful of features.

You might wonder why suppliers both to add all those generally unused features. The reason is that a few key customers say they "need them." See Choice can be a problem or choice can paralyze
Apple always has taken one approach to features, while Microsoft and the "open source" communities generally have taken a different approach. For decades, developers have argued for and against unlimited choice or "openness." At the moment, it appears Apple's choices might be winning the argument.

When Google Android developers complain of "fragmentation," that's a downside, or problem, with "open" approaches. Apple always has taken the other view. It limits openness, limits choices, in order to enhance user experience. Where an open source or Microsoft approach is "you can do that," Apple essentially asks "why do you need to do that?" 
With so many projects, if the customer is willing to go without a small subset of the functionality they think they need, it can save a massive amount of effort, cost, and complexity and result in a much more elegant, hassle-free solution that makes them much happier in the long run, some would now argue.
Apple’s customers are often the sort of people willing to make these tradeoffs, because that’s how most of Apple’s products are designed: if you can compromise on some of the features and capabilities you think you need, you can get a product that works better and makes you happier with far less aggravation. And for most people, the benefits will outweigh the missing features.
Granted, there are trade-offs, as there always are in all engineering projects. “We know what’s best for you," Apple essentially says.
People who aren’t willing or able to compromise on their needs regularly are much more likely to be Windows customers. The Windows message is much more palatable to corporate buyers, committees, middlemen, and people who don’t like to be told what’s best for them.

But the world seems to be moving a bit more in Apple's direction.

Is Firefox Headed Towards A Massive Decline? Its Co-Founder Thinks So

It's hard to remember (and some never have known) a time when Google and Apple were upstart companies. But companies age, especially when they succeed.

Firefox was part of a "rag tag" open movement when it challenged the hold Microsoft’s Internet Explorer had in the browser market. When Mozilla began its assault, Internet Explorer had something on the order of 90 percent market share. Over the past five or so years, Microsoft's share has dropped below 60 percent, and Firefox has 25 percent to 30 percent share of the market.

But success has bred discontent is some quarters. At least some think Firefox is no longer the light, open alternative it once was.

Android Battery Life Victim of Open Approach

"Open and standards-based approaches to creating products are the industry norm, and generally result in faster development times and lower retail prices. But there sometimes is a price. Because it does not take the "open" approach, Apple is able to optimize performance of its hardware and software.

Conversely, open platforms such as Android are not able to take an end-to-end view, all the time. And that seems to be playing out with complaints of limited Android battery life, presumably from users who have downloaded many, or some particular applications.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt himself has taken the liberty to suggest that some of the third party applications offered through the Android Market are not completely efficient at resource management, thus requiring more power from an Android smartphone than they might otherwise need.

As with most other aspects of software and hardware development, there are trade-offs to be made. Android trades control for development speed, lower cost and diversity. Apple trades maximum third-party software development for better user experience.

Top Five Hot Topics at Mobile World Congress 2010

The Top-Five hot topics at the Mobile World Congress this year, according to analysts at Juniper Research, are:
1. Flurry of launches to increase competition in the smartphone space
2. Operators announce Apps Community
3. GSMA embarks on LTE interconnection standards
4. NFC payment trial at Mobile World Congress to presage widespread NFC adoption?
5. Android platform gains critical mass- the rise of the open source OS

Smartphone launches from Samsung, Sony Ericsson, ZTE, Motorola Acer and several others will dramatically increase competition in the smartphone space, says John Levett, Juniper Research analyst.

In the apps market, the launch by 24 mobile operators of a "Wholesale Applications Community" should allow for mobile internet and applications to be downloaded without the potential headache of conflicting technologies, he says.

With LTE now boasting several live roll-outs and as many as 75 build-out commitments, some 40 mobile industry organizations have now backed industry association GSMA’s initiative to standardise the delivery of voice and messaging services for LTE.

A SIM-based mobile payments trial by the GSMA, Samsung, Telefonica, and several partners could herald a new era in the development of mobile payments using near field communications technology.

MWC 2010 also has seen a proliferation of mobile handsets using Google’s Android platform with announcements from Alcatel, Dell, HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and ZTE. that means a higher-profile for open source operating systems overall.

Open Source Trend for 2008




Without proclaiming 2008 the "year of" anything, open source seems to be getting traction in the enterprise computing environment in server farms and on desktops and mobiles. Open source is preparing for additional traction in the consumer mobile markets. Linux has grown its presence in the consumer mobile area, and Google's Android initiative will start to bear fruit sometime after 2008.

Open Mobile a Game Changer


There arguably are as many threats and opportunities as mobile carriers move towards more-open networks and terms of use. Not all customers will want all that much control over their experience, devices and services. Walled gardens work well where optimizing a complicated user experience is necessary. iPod offers a salient current example of that approach.

Others will want nothing so much as a mobile version of the Interent. But most users will be found in between those two poles. For many consumers, the ability to unbundle the device purchase decision from the service provider will be change enough, as has been the case in European markets where such unbundling is commonplace.

The open networks trend will more troubling for carriers to the extent that more users may want to use their mobiles just like they use their PCs to access apps and services delivered by the Web.

The business challenge there is the same one carriers have faced in the wireline broadband access market. They have a pipe business based on "access." Beyond that it has been tough to monetize the access.

It isn't clear yet how the user expectations about payment models change over time. For some, there will be a permanent change in thinking about devices. People will own the devices they want and then select access and transport services separately, much as they buy their own PCs and buy broadband access from any number of suppliers.

Just as clearly, some will prefer to have their handsets subsidized in exchange for service contracts.

It is clear enough that mobile applications will explode, much as they did when the broadband-accessible Web was popularized. Carriers will sell lots more data plans, and bigger data plans. Beyond that is where the business models will have to be developed. Right now, it's hard to determine whether this is primarily good or bad for carriers, as much as it is clearly good for end users. Obviously there is new thinking by carrier executives that the trend now is inevitable in any case, and offers the possibility of rapid applications development that will drive the attractiveness of mobile broadband access itself.

Open Source or Proprietary? Even Split


When functionality is equivalent, IT security professionals have an almost equal preference for deploying open source software (53 percent) as commercial software (47 percent), according to a recent survey of 228 security professionals by Barracuda Networks.

In the survey, 80 percent of respondents cited pricing as the top reason for adopting open source software over commercial software, while 57 percent selected access to source code and 41 percent chose community code review as the primary reasons for open source preference.

On the other hand, the survey found that the top reason for deploying commercial software was vendor professional services, at 65 percent, while 47 percent of respondents named ease of adoption in their organization and 47 percent said automated updates were key.

Better bug fixes are one open source advantage. So is access to the source code. Proprietary software, on the other hand, benefits from the perception that it will be easier to deploy and support over time. We can argue about how long that will continue to be true. There isn't much doubt that open source also is becoming part of the larger fabric of software offered by suppliers who historically have offered proprietary solutions.

All of which suggests that open source simply has become another tool to use, when it works and when it fits.

Here's a Metric


Blogger Don Dodge (on The Next Big Thing)cites a statistic provided by David Skok, a venture capitalist with Matrix Partners. On average about three percent of all open source software users pay for a support contract, and most of them are business users, as you would guess.

Since the three percent paying for maintenance, support, training, and consulting will spread their buying across the entire ecosystem of providers, it is obvious that high volume adoption is needed to support many such companies. In the mass market, it is a surer route to sell hardware or software add-ons.

The conversion or "upsell" rate would strike many in the direct mail business as "par for the course. Conversion rates for targeted mass mailings, even when one has the right audience, the right product and the right timing, tend to hover in the three percent range.
