40% Will Increase Email, Text Message Marketing Campaigns, Survey Finds


About 40 percent of email marketers surveyed in November 2009 by Silverpop say they will increase their email marketing budgets in 2010, while 47 percent said their budgets would stay the same.

In the coming year, more than half of survey respondents (52 percent) said increasing customer loyalty was a top email marketing goal.

But incremental revenue clearly is the top driver. Overall, 51 percent of respondents want to drive incremental revenue with their email program, while 65 percent of those with larger email budgets say that's their top goal in 2010.

"Inbox clutter" remains an issue for 37percent of respondents. That's an issue, but nothing like the opt in issues faced by users of text messaging campaigns, whose users often must pay "by the message" to receive them. Cluttering up an inbox is one thing, charging someone to receive your marketing message is far worse.

And social media is growing in important. About 84 percent or marketers plan to include social media into their email programs in the coming year, while 38 percent will add text messaging.

Marketers enjoying budget increases are even more likely to add these to their programs; About 89 percent of marketers will growing budgets say they will incorporate social media,  while 44 percent of respondents with growing budgets say they will add text message campaigns.

Email linked to popular social networks will work fine for PC-based users, but text messaging will be needed to reach mobile users on the go.

Google Adds "Place Pages"


One simple step any business can take to become more involved with mobile-based marketing is to take advantage of "Place Pages," a new feature Google is introducing.

Basically, a Place Page is a free one-page listing any business can sign up for, and which is available to mobile and PC-based searches using Google Maps.

Listings are free to create. Think of it as a sort of enhanced phone book whose entries pop up on a Google Map search when a user is looking for something near a physical location.

There's more. The Place Page also allows retailers to create coupons, for example. Also, an analytics feature also allows retailers to track where customers are coming from and what they search for to find a particular retail location.

Why Droid is Important

Lots of people position the new Motorola Droid, available on the Verizon Wireless network at the moment, as the first, or the best, competitor to the Apple iPhone. We can argue about that. What seems much less contestable is the possibility that many of Verizon's 86.5 million subscribers now will begin to create a new critical mass of users for location-based marketing initiatives.

Until the total number of smartphone users on particular operating systems or devices is reached, it will be difficult to create mobile marketing campaigns with reasonable prospects of success. And make no mistake, mobile marketing has to be different than the interruption-based advertising we are used to with place-based media.

Mobile users are not likely to appreciate mobile advertising that they haven't asked for, or worse, must pay for. The difference between mobiles and TVs, radios, DVD or game players is that mobile devices are uniquely seen as "personal" devices. Peoploe use the other devices, but only the mobile is always with a user, and typically is seen as a personal and private device.

The other important angle is that mobile media typically is consumed as a byproduct of some other activity; it is not a primary destination or activity.

Virtually any mobile marketing message is, by definition, catching users in the middle of doing something else. So the value of the messages must be situational, in context, or relevant to those other activities. On the other hand, the key change is that devices such as the iPhone and Droid incorporate location information.

Potential message senders will know whether a user is at home, at some other indoor location or moving. If moving, message senders potentially will know whether a user is moving at high speed (in an auto) and should not be interrupted, or is moving at pedestrian speed, when a contextual message might be safe to send and also relevant to current location.

Presumably it will be possible (with permission) to determine whether a person is using public transportation, even when moving at high speed, and might be amenable to messages.

It will take a bit more work, and more opt-in detail, to determine whether a business person is presently trying to figure out where to get a cab, take a client to dinner, or find their way to their hotel, or whether a person might be trying to figure out what social venue to attend after work.

So why is Droid important, beyond simple creation of critical mass? Droid, as are all Android devices, are part of a larger effort by Google to tap mobile advertising potential. Google has unusual incentives to create the sort of detailed opt-in processes needed to create granular messages of high relevance to end users.

The reason this is important to end users is that if mobile network providers and the rest of the mobile ecosystem can create self-sustaining revenue streams based on mobile messaging, the providers can justify perpetual investments in the quality of the mobile networks and devices, potentially holding down end user costs as well.

Marketers Sell to Mobile Users, Not Subs



There are times when counting things one way, compared to a slightly different way, yield results that largely are the same. But for mobile marketers, counting mobile "subscribers" and "mobile users" will produce distinct results that do matter. 

The differences are that "subscriptions" are not equal to "users" because some users have multiple subscriptions. If you usse a mobile broadband card or dongle, plus two cell phones, you have three mobile subscriptions, for example. 

Mobile marketers want to reach people, not devices or subscriptions, so the method of counting makes a difference. In Europe, for example, many studies show mobile penetration to be at or in excess of 100 percent, but that is because many users have multiple subscriber information modules, each of which has a phone number, and counts as a subscription, even when only one SIM is in active use at any time. 

For marketers, the number of mobile users is a more useful figure because it more accurately describes the audience, and thus potential reach.

So how big is the actual U.S. mobile audience? Reserchers at eMarketer estimate that mobile penetration of users is 76.5 percent in 2009, or 235 million people,  rising gradually to 255.4 million in 2013, or 80 percent penetration.

By way of comparison, subscriber fgures from CTIA – The Wireless Association show there aer 276.61 million mobile subscriptions in service as of June 2009. That would work out to about 90 percent penetration of people. 

That 13-percent difference might not make a great deal of practical difference, except that the difference in estimates means the potential reach of any mobile marketing campaign might potentially reach 41.6 million fewer people. 

In the context of a mobile campaign that might not be so crucial, especially when marketers target one specific device or one specific carrier. But the difference in potential reach could be quite large for any campaign that tries to reach most users, and will certainly be reflected in the cost of any campaign.

Impulse Purchases Key for Mobile Marketing Messages

A significant number of American consumers are interested in receiving opt-in marketing messages, according to a new survey by Harris Interactive. It also appears impulse purchases are prime candidates for mobile marketing messages.

The survey of 2,029 mobile phone users, ages 18 and older shows 42 percent of users between the ages of 18 and 34 and 33 percent of those between 35 to 44 are at least somewhat interested in receiving alerts about sales on their cell phones from their favorite establishments.

Men are more interested than women. About 51 percent of men ages 18 to 34, and 34 percent of women of the same age range are at least somewhat interested in receiving opt-in shopping alerts on their cell phones.

Only one percent of cell phone owners currently receive alerts about sales at their favorite establishments on their phones, yet 26 percent would be at least somewhat interested in receiving such alerts, assuming they were permission-based.

Of those interested in receiving alerts, 53 percent would be at least somewhat interested in being notified about restaurant specials around them.

About 43 percent say they would be interested in getting information about movie or event tickets. About 39 percent are interested in getting weather information, while 37 percent indicated interest in information about clearance sales.

Sizable percentages expressed interest in specific products such as pizza, clothes, fast food, electronics, music, happy hour specials or bar and night club offers.

Impulse purchases seem particularly germane. The survey found that about 90 percent of U.S. adults have made an impulse purchase when they were out shopping in a store, based on a sale or special offer going on around where they were.

Nearly a quarter of adults owning cell phones (22 percent) make this type of impulse purchase at least once per week or more often.

36% Mobile Marketing Growth in 2009


The U.S. market for mobile advertising will grow 36 percent, increasing from $169 million in 2008 to $229 million in 2009, according to a new forecast by Interpublic's Magna.

That's a downward revision from the company's previous forecast for mobile ad growth in 2009, primarily due to the brutal economy.

The sheer number of mobile devices in use, about 270 million at the end of 2008, according to the CTIA, is one driver. The  mobile Web is the other driver. In January, 22 million individuals accessed the mobile Web daily and 63 million monthly, up from 11 million and 37 million for each frequency during January 2008, Magna says.

The report found that smart phones are key to growth. About 32 percent of AT&T Wireless contract subscribers owning such a device at the end of the first quarter of 2009, more than double that of the previous year, for example.

Still, location is a powerful new capability for anybody with marketing or sales responsibilities. Who you are, what you like to do, and where you are, right now, are powerful attributes we ultimately will figure out how to use.

There's one clear historical footnote: everytime somebody declares any year "the year of...", it isn't.

Toblerone Runs Social Mobile Campaign

Kraft Foods' Toblerone is sponsoring a "Play it, Forward it, Share the Gratitude" mobile promotion that encourages consumers to extend gratitude to loved ones by uploading mobile video and text messages and have them broadcast on digital walls in Greenbelt and Bonifacio High Street in the Philippines.

There is a Web site for the Toblerone ‘Play it, Forward it’ promotion with brand information, details about the promotion, upload and entry forms, desktop widgets, contact details and tallies of uploaded videos, texts and votes.

Consumers can send their thank you videos and text messages to the mobile phones of families and friends from the Toblerone campaign site.

Customers can use bar codes on the candy’s packaging to retrieve discount mobile coupons as well. Social apps supporting the campaign also are available on Facebook and Friendster.

DMA Bluetooth Marketing Guidelines Released

New mobile marketing guidelines for Bluetooth campaigns have been developed by the Direct Marketing Association for the U.K. and other markets, and are designed to protect users from "spam." Good move.

Bluetooth-Based Mobile Marketing Campaigns

Though most mobile marketing campaigns up to this point have been based on use of text messaging (short message service), more common availability of Bluetooth also offers an opportunity for proximity messages over short distances, without the expense of the data network, says Mark Brill, Direct Marketing Association Mobile Marketing Council chairman.

That means creating a local Bluetooth zone at a physical location with high traffic, such as restaurants, public transit stations, bars or retail locations, able to reach users within a relatively confined area of possibly 260 feet in diameter.

"The key to a successful Bluetooth proximity marketing campaign is to provide a clear incentive or offer, explain why you are communicating and gain the trust of the user," he says.

About 30 percent of people have their Bluetooth turned on all of the time, mostly to use hands-free headsets. The TV show "Lost" has used such a technique to promote the new season by allowing users to download wallpaper and ringtones, images or a trailer.

Bacardi Rum has used Bluetooth at music festivals, sending drink vouchers and allowing users to send their own photos and messages to a large screen at an event.

Levi’s Jeans has equipped personnel with backpacks equipped with Bluetooth units and small screens.

Still, there are issues. A Bluetooth connection to a mobile does not provide the marketer with a phone number or user information, so tracking a user requires some form of registration. As always, opt-in rules are needed as well.

MoFuse, or Mobile Fusion, is a Web application that allows a user or company to easily and instantly create a mobile version of a blog or Web site.

If a blog or site has an RSS feed, MoFuse will use that as the main source of content for a new mobile site. The advantages are obvious. Content creators can continue to create "PC" sites and MoFuse will do the translations. MoFuse also can create static content pages.

Mobile Marketing Growth: Inevitable Result of Mobile Web

There's a simple reason so many executives and practitioners now are exploring mobile marketing: Industry executives widely believe mobile computing devices will be the "primary" Internet access device for most people, globally, by 2020.

More than three quarters of the expert respondents (77 percent) recently surveyed by the Pew Internet & American Life Project said they agreed with a
scenario that posited that the mobile computing device will be the primary Internet communications platform for a majority of people across the world by 2020.

Advertising Hits Tipping Point; Mobile Video Hasn't

It is probably worth noting, with significant attention focused on substitution of mobile and Internet video for traditional packaged multi-channel video, that there's lots of activity, money and attention focused on substitution of other services such as advertising.

And advertising already is at an inflection point: video isn't there yet. That's important for anybody who thinks they may have a chance to build a business based on changes in user behavior.

And inflection points are crucial. Move too early and you die. Move too late and you miss the opportunity.

The analogy: assume firms have a chance to establish themselves when water turns to ice or to steam. Since most major changes in established markets do not occur overnight, the analogy is a gradually rising or falling temperature. For a long time, it appears as though not much is happening.

But then the quantum change occurs. Almost instantly, water changes to gas or forms ice.

That's pretty much what happened to the U.S. newspaper business in early 2009: an accumulation of decades worth of changes produced a quantum change. Video is not there yet. Advertising is, in at least one segment of the business.

Since the tipping point has been reached, we should expect change at a faster rate than has been happening.

Wireless Providers to Collaborate on Marketing "Best Practices"


The Mobile Marketing Association says the four largest U.S. wireless service providers--Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA-- have agreed to coordinate their mobile marketing guidelines with the MMA’s "best practices" guidelines. This industry-first agreement is intened to produce a dramatic reduction in the costs of launching mobile marketing campaigns, faster time to market for campaigns and improved consumer satisfaction by improving the consistency and efficiency of mobile marketing campaigns across the four major U.S. wireless service providers.

In addition to the four largest U.S. wireless service providers, major aggregators, brands and content owners includingVeriSign, Neustar, Limbo, and Thumbplay are supporting the process.

The agreement is expected to enhance efficiencies in running short code programs, accelerate the time to market for mobile campaigns, ensure monitoring programs and audit results are more consistent and reduce operational costs across the mobile marketing ecosystem.
