Sprint LG Rumor Bug Found
Sprint has halted shipping new LG LX260 Rumor units to stores because of a bug that can trigger a complete erasure of the phone's firmware, says Christopher Price at PhoneNews.com.
Sprint has isolated the issue to a specific debugging menu, intended for LG engineers to work on the device during development, says Price. Sprint has not disclosed the specific code, to prevent abuse.
The trigger is timed to function only at start up, so users can avoid the problem by not pressing any buttons on the phone for at least 30 seconds after it has fully powered on, Price notes.
The phone, once triggered, cannot be restored except at the factory. The debugging code even erases the portions of the firmware that would allow a Sprint Store to recover the device (requiring what is known in the industry as a JTAG restore, Price notes.

Hey,
Im an owner of a Rumor by LG already. And i have encountered a problem twice in the first month since i bought it.
What happened is the first time is im just randomly texting, and the fone powers off randomly, no shut down screen, just powers off like the battery had been removed. So when i tried to power it back on, i became stuck in an endless cycle bug. The phone will power up, show the Rumor title screen for about 10 seconds, and then power off again...IMMEDIATELY after it powers off, it reboots and tries again. And again ir powers off and restarts. To say the least, this is an ENDLESS cycle that happens everytime i power down the phone.
IS THIS THE SAME PROBLEM MENTIONED ABOVE???
Also, i was able to conquer the problem in say...i dont know....4 hours? After an uncountable number of times of removing the battery (which powers it off completely) and restarting it again, it finally just continued loading. This happened only once and i have yet to discover the trick for why it happened this one time.
That being, my phone is now stuck on this endless cycle AGAIN, so if i do figure out how to power it up, i will be sure to re-post!!!
Thanks!!
P.S. if this is the same problem as mentioned above, jsut post another comment below this one with an answer. =)
Sounds, unfortunately, like you have an entirely different problem, though related to the firmware.
Out of nowhere today, the screen of my Rumor began to become fuzzy, and move around, like an old fashioned tv would when it doesnt get reception. I have no idea what happened, i did not bump it or anything, i was holding it texting when it happened. this will go away if i click buttons, or if i call someone, but continues to slightly flicker.
Is this a consistent bug in the Rumor phone or a personal problem of mine? Does it connect to the bug here?
I have the exact same problem as Jessica but worse. It started out getting fuzzy, acting weird, and occasionally randomly turning off. Now, the screen is completely white and I can rarely see anything on it at all.
Oh my god, Jessica same thing happened to me with my white rumor about 7 months ago. I eventually got a different phone and than just got a fixed rumor made after may. Yeah right...my phone is supposed to be fixed but just turns off ALL the time.
Oh forgot to mention that mine went completely white too :/
ugh, mine too. Sure, my Rumor turned off randomly every now and then. It also would do the start up thing again, and again, and again. (btw the only way I could get it to turn back on is just leave it alone and wait for it to turn back on. It may take 10min or so) Anyways, this last week i checked the clock and the screen was backwards. so then i took the battery out and put it back in but it keeps getting worse. The screen has been backwards, upside down, slanted, reversed, or just completly white. :((
yeahh. this happened to mee.
like ill just be texting and it will turn off.
it happens like at least 10 times a day.
the first time i brought in
the guy like
did some update thing.
(press the keys)*228
and it worked for like a week.
and i did it myslef.
it didnt work.
this phone pisses me off.
this is my like fifth rumor..
Yes. My brother and I both have this phone. His phone had the same problem that Jessica had. It went fuzzy like a tv with bad reception and you cannot even read the screen. My phone randomly turns off (usually when I'm texting) and sometimes the QUERTY keyboard keyes are very slow to respond. Does Sprint have any sort of warranty that will allow us to get new phones?
Byron or anybody else having the similiar problem...I had a microSD card in mine. I took it out and as soon as I did, it booted up immediately. Hope that helps.
My Rumor also powers off randomly. I have also incountered the problem with it powering on and rebooting itself, after about 10 or 15 minutes it will finally come on. One time I was just browsing the internet with it and the screen froze then powered off. My mom also has a rumor but it never messes up. MY dad used to have one but one day it would not accept any charger so he just got the lg Lotus. I recomend to never by a nother rumor again.
Anyone experience endless boot cycle issue on the Rumor should pull the SD card and try booting again.
THANKS. I PULLED MY SD CARD AND IT WORKED!!!
