There is a seeming move towards "integrated" bundles of hardware and software the Apple model, rather than on the "open" model. Think also about the Research in Motion and HP models. Google already has tried to demonstrate the value of such integration on a smaller scale with its Nexus S effort. But there are potential issues, as Google straddles the roles of open software provider and provider of branded handsets.

Google Gets 24,000 Patents with Motorola Mobility Buy
Google is effectively buying some 24,000 or so patents in the Motorola Mobility acquisition. That's the biggest strategic value for Google, as it provides protection against patent infringement lawsuits. All the other potential value and issues are subsidiary, though significant, one might argue.
