Kuapay Uses QR Codes, Wants to Deploy Now

Mobile payments startup Kuapay provides an illustration of the fact that there are many communications technologies, other than bar codes or near field communications, that can be used as part of a mobile payment system. Kuapay also is an example of proponents that do not want to wait for widespread near field communications before trying to get retailer and end user traction.

That's an important issue. Do you want to try and get a user base and retailer traction now, even if you can't easily use NFC, or wait for NFC to be widely deployed and take your chances then? Some will conclude it is better to try and move now.

Kuapay has iPhone, BlackBerry and Android applications for consumers. Users can add their credit card information and then present participating merchants with a quick response code to scan and pay at the register. It functions fairly similar to Starbucks’ 2D barcode-scanning system.
