Google Adds Curated Content

Google News is introducing a new section to its U.S. edition: Editors’ Picks, a display of original content that journalists have selected as editorial highlights from their publications. The move is a nod to human editorial judgment, even when content curation remains important. 
The feature, which will live on the right-hand column of the Google News page, is part of Google's effort to include more editorial value in its curated, algorithm-driven news selection. 
That’s a big deal. Editors’ Picks highlights, or is intended to highlight “in-depth pieces of lasting value.” But it also uses human judgment and human editors. Up to this point, Google has practiced software-driven content curation. Now it will add human curation, if not original content production. 
The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, BBC News, Reuters and Los Angeles Times are among the initial content providers.
